If you’re like most people, you’ve probably tried to boost your creativity and overcome procrastination. But maybe it seems like these things are impossible to achieve, or even if they’re possible, they seem so far out of reach that they might as well be on the moon.
I know the feeling! I’ve been there. But I also know that with the right strategies and mindset, you can make significant progress. And I want to help you get there. You need a way to approach productivity that works for YOU—and I want to show you how. Here are some tips for you:
Set clear goals
Remember you’re not just trying to reach your goal, you’re trying to achieve it. When you set a goal for yourself, you’re also setting an expectation. If you can’t reach the expectation, then it’ll feel like a failure—and that’s not good for anyone!
If you want to get started on something, the first thing you should do is clearly define what it is that you want to achieve. Once you know what that is, break it down into smaller, manageable tasks that will help you get there.
Create a routine
The most important thing you can do as a creative is to establish a routine. A routine will help you build discipline and momentum, which are critical for anyone who wants to make art for a living.
You can start by setting aside a specific amount of time each day or week to work on your creative projects. This could be an hour or two in the morning, or it could be a few hours after you get home from work. You might want to start by setting aside one day per week, and then gradually increase the amount of time you spend on your projects until you’re spending as much time as possible with them.
No matter what type of schedule you choose, it’s important that you stick to it as closely as possible until it becomes second nature. That way, building discipline will become easier!
Manage your time effectively
If you’re anything like me, you probably have a lot of things to do at once. Sometimes it feels like there’s just too much to get done! But if you manage your time effectively, you’ll be able to get more done in less time. There are many techniques for time management out there—I personally use the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working for focused intervals of time followed by short breaks. Or maybe you prefer the “time blocking” method, where you assign specific time slots for different activities.
These tools can help you stay focused on one task at a time and let you know when it’s time to move on to another task. They also give you a sense of accomplishment when you finish something, which can make all the difference when it comes to staying productive throughout the day!
Identify and eliminate distractions
It’s hard to concentrate when you’re distracted by everything around you. But there are some things you can do to minimize or eliminate those distractions.
First, identify the things that distract you the most. Maybe it’s your phone buzzing with notifications every 10 minutes or a co-worker who won’t stop talking about her vacation plans. You may need to find a quiet workspace where you can go without interruption, or turn off notifications on your phone so they don’t interrupt your flow.
Second, find ways to minimize or eliminate those distractions. If it’s not possible to turn off notifications on your phone all day long, try using website blockers to block yourself from distracting websites while you work. Or if a coworker won’t stop talking about their vacation plans, ask them if they’d be willing to do it after work hours.
Embrace failure and learn from it
As a creative, you have to get comfortable with failure. It’s not just that mistakes are going to happen—they’re inevitable, and you’ll probably make them more than once. But the important thing is that you learn from those mistakes so that you can keep moving forward. Embrace the learning process, and remember that failure is often an essential part of the creative journey. Learn from your mistakes and use them to grow and improve.
Take breaks and practice self-care
You’ve heard it before: breaks are good for you. And you know what? They are! Taking breaks is a great way to avoid burnout and maintain your creativity, productivity, and sanity. Just think about it—when you’re working on something for a long time, it’s easy to get caught up in thinking about how much work there is left to do that you forget to take care of yourself. And when you don’t take care of yourself, eventually you’ll start to feel stressed out and overwhelmed by everything that’s on your plate.
Here are some tips for taking breaks and practicing self-care:
- Take regular check-ins with yourself throughout the day. Stop what you’re doing every hour or so and ask yourself how things are going so far. If something feels overwhelming or difficult, try breaking it down into smaller chunks so that it doesn’t seem as overwhelming anymore.
- Engage in activities that relax and rejuvenate you! Try exercising, meditating, or spending time with loved ones—whatever helps bring peace into your life! These things are important because they give us the space we need from the daily grind so we can come back refreshed and ready for more work later.
Remember, everyone’s journey is unique, so be patient and kind to yourself along the way. Celebrate your successes and keep pushing forward, even when faced with obstacles.
