Art has the remarkable ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. It invites us to see beauty in the everyday, and finding inspiration in the mundane can lead to some of the most captivating creations. In this article, we’ll explore how to tap into your inner artist by embracing the seemingly ordinary aspects of life.

Observe with Fresh Eyes

The first step towards unlocking your creativity is to observe the world around you with fresh eyes. Take a moment to truly see the details, colors, textures, and shapes that often go unnoticed. You’ll be amazed at how everyday objects can reveal hidden beauty when viewed from a new perspective.

In her book The Creative Habit, Twyla Tharp says: “Creativity is not a mystical talent; it’s a skill that can be learned.” She urges us to “look at things with fresh eyes” and “get out of our normal routine” to activate our creative mindsets. There are many ways you can do this, but one of my favorites is by taking photos on walks through nature. Not only will this help you see things differently but it also serves as an outlet for your creativity!

Embrace Routine as a Canvas

Mundane routines are a goldmine of inspiration. Whether it’s your morning coffee ritual or the way you arrange your workspace, these everyday habits can serve as a canvas for artistic exploration.

Pay attention to the subtle nuances of your routines and consider how they can be transformed into art. Consider how you could express your routine in a different medium or material than usual. How could you make it more interesting? Could you use it as a metaphor or allegory for something else? Or perhaps there’s an idea that could be applied to this routine that would make it more fulfilling? Take some time to look at your daily life through an artist’s lens — and see what happens!

Experiment with Mediums

Discovering new creative mediums can be a fun and exciting experience. Dabbling in different artistic mediums can broaden your horizons, help you discover your style and influence your work.

Painting: Painting allows you to express yourself with color and texture. A good painting can transform a blank canvas into something spectacular. Painting is an excellent way to unleash your inner Picasso or Van Gogh.

Drawing: When we draw, we see the world in a different way. Drawing is an exercise in observation — it gives us the opportunity to pay attention to detail and create something beautiful out of it. Drawing is also a great way to free up our creative side, because it doesn’t require any special equipment or skills like painting does (except for maybe some paper).

Photography: Taking photos is another great way to explore your creativity through art. You don’t need any fancy equipment or expensive cameras — just a smartphone will do! Photography is great for documenting life’s special moments, but it also offers endless possibilities for experimentation with composition and light.

Engage Your Senses

There’s a misconception that art is purely visual. Art engages all the senses — you can smell, taste and touch it. The best way to learn how to engage your senses is to pay attention to how they interact with your environment.

The next time you’re out in nature, notice how different textures feel beneath your feet as you walk through grass or sand, for example. Notice what sounds are coming from the wind rustling leaves or birds chirping — and then translate these sensory experiences into your artwork by incorporating texture, sound and other elements into your pieces.

This will help you become more aware of how all of your senses are working together, which will help you create better art pieces that resonate on a deeper level with people who see them.

Keeping a Creative Journal

You’ve probably heard the saying, “You’re only as good as your last piece of work.” It’s a cliché, but it’s true. When you’re writing, drawing, or making art, you want to be proud of what you’ve done. You want to feel accomplished and inspired.

A journal is a great way to keep track of your progress — both personal and professional. Use it to document your thoughts, observations, and sketches. It’s a place to collect ideas, reflect on your experiences, and let your creativity flow freely. Whether through words or sketches, your journal is a powerful tool for artistic expression.

So the bottom line is, embracing the mundane is a powerful way to tap into your inner artist. By observing with fresh eyes, embracing routines, and experimenting with different mediums, you’ll uncover a world of creative potential. Remember to trust your instincts and let your creativity flow naturally.
